| The National Historic District shows architectural styles of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Blocks within the District are separated by unique stairways given street names. Alma is located along the Mississippi River, stretched snugly between the river and steep 500 foot bluffs. Early settlers were attracted to the area because it reminded them of their homeland, Switzerland. Self-guided walking tour information is available at City Hall. |

Bow and Arrow Historical Marker, WI
State Historical Markers [1]
In 1903, Jacob Brower of the Minnesota Historical Society mapped an unusual arrangement of boulders on the tall bluff slope located between the river towns of Hager City and Bay City. He concluded that the aligned boulders depicted a bow (200 feet tall) with an arrow set to shoot towards Lake Pepin while others thought it portrayed a large bird. The origin dates back to before the area was settled. A State Historical Marker and parking area is located adjacent to the Great River Road affording a distant view of the mystic site.

| Wisconsin's portion of the Great River Road (Highway 35) can lay claim to the most beautiful views and scenic overlooks along the entire Mississippi River. Here the river carved a deep gorge through the layered limestone. Towering bluffs stand out against green-forested valleys. Just east of Hwy. 63, an historical marker points out an unusual landmark; a stone pattern shaped like a bow and arrow created on a distant hillside by early Native Americans. The section between Prescott and Stockholm contains some of the most challenging hills in the state. Riding east between Bay City and Maiden Rock, the road rises 450 feet in two-and-a-half miles. The reward is a stunning view of Lake Pepin below; the Mississippi River fills the valley from bluff to bluff. Just east of Pepin, a natural dam created by the delta of the Chippewa River backs up the waters of the Mississippi River for 24 miles, creating the lRiver isn't all work, though. The laid-back character of Wisconsin river towns invites you to linger. Local antique shops are wonderful places to explore. Quaint cafes en-route are essential refueling stops, each with its own unique character. Numerous wayside parks and historical sites offer a chance to rest for the next hill, or just kick back and watch the river flow. |
 |
|
Directions: Tour starts at stoplight at Bridge over St. Croix River in downtown Prescott, WI and follows WI Highway 35 south (WI Great River Road National Scenic Byway)to Stockholm. Numerous waysides, some with drinking water & toilets.

| The Mississippi isn't the only river focus along the Great River State Trail. It bridges 18 streams and channels coursing their way to the Mighty Mississippi. These crossings and surrounding wetlands are havens for wildlife often seen in the cool shade even at mid-day. The Black River forms a maze of channels that herons, eagles egrets, turtles, deer and waterfowl love. This trail is located on 2 National Wildlife refuges and is a mecca for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. |

A delightful 21.5-mile ride along the La Crosse River between Sparta and Onalaska. The trail is a middle link between the Elroy-Sparta Trail and the Great River Trail. On the way it runs close to an active rail line and a wave from the train engineers is always guaranteed. In Bangor, a short spur trail takes you to a pleasant town park. Web site address links to a trail map.West Salem has a number of historic buildings including the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hamlin Garland and the unique Palmer-Gullickson Octagon Home. In the mid-19th century, octagon houses were thought to be the ideal human habitation. The theory was promoted by a man named Orson Fowler. He also believed you could tell a person's character by the bumps on their head. Neither idea caught on as well as the bike trail. |

Directions: From I-90 take exit 4 to Hwy 16; turn right on Hwy 16; go to the next stop light, CTH B, turn left; parking lot will be on the left side. Or go to Onalaska (exit 3) where the two trails connect.

| The Van Loon Wildlife Area Truss Bridge Group is a unique combination of five rare bowstring arch truss bridges and one low truss bridge which was adopted from Pierce County. They represent two styles of bridge construction popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries which are quickly being replaced due to deterioration or inability to meet today's greater traffic requirements. Currently the bridges are open only to pedestrian traffic. The bridges are located in the Van Loon Wildlife Area on the Old McGilvray Bottoms Road. The wildlife area contains about 4000 acres of land, much of it former farmland, along and through the Black River and its backwater. The purpose of the area is to provide birdwatching, fishing and hunting for waterfowl, upland game and deer. |
 |
|
Directions: Located in Northwest La Crosse County, about 3.5 miles northwest of the Holmen. The property extends 5 miles south of the Black River, from Hwy 53/93 Hunter's Bridge to New Amsterdam on County Trunk XX. The entire trail from the parking lot to the 6th bridge and back measures 3.7 miles.

Spring Street, Stockholm, WI. 54769

| In the Village of Stockholm there is a small, picturesque museum in a building that was once the old Post Office. It is the home of the Stockholm Institute, a historical society incorporated in 1984 to preserve and celebrate the history of the Stockholm area.
Stockholm was fortunate to have been the home of Orlin Anderson, now deceased, who was a dedicated amateur historian and archiver of all things related to the area. He was also a dedicated pack-rat and because of that predilection there are probably items and photos in the museum that would otherwise have been long lost.
Orlin’s enthusiasm for all things old encouraged others to donate their objects, books, and photos, and it may have been the accumulation of items that inspired insightful residents to create an organization that would preserve and display this wealth of material and memories. Thus was born the Institute. Its visitors come from across the country and around the world. It publishes a regular newsletter for its members, and in the past has been a sponsor of the Heritage Days that Stockholm has hosted.
In 2006, the Institute welcomed the 50-member Bjurtjarn Theater Group. This group toured the U.S. performing its play “Off to America – They Sold their Homesteads" (a story about their ancestors who founded Stockholm). After the events and festivities, the theater group donated the rights to the play to the Stockholm Institute.
The Institute’s museum building has recently been refurbished and redecorated in an appropriate Swedish palette, with new shelves for books and a large work table available for visitors who wish to review the family histories that have been gathered. A local archivist is also in the process of identifying and organizing the Institute’s wealth of material (some of it retrieved from Orlin’s estate) so that it remains usable to future historians. |
